However, there is more to this word than English directly translate. The term also carries meaning of unspoken effects that are profound and deep. The Material Translator is the method used to present this fuzzy abstract word as a meditation training machine which allows users to feed a chosen material into it for analysis. The machine produces the graphic and sound outputs through infrared analysis spectrum. It is a tool to generate atmosphere and phenomena. Its purpose is to make the idea of XinQing tangible and create notions of objects that actually have XinQing. The goal of the training machine is stimulating or restoring the human instinct to process emotions, allowing the users to meditate and converse with the object by themselves. The training machine only acts as a medium or simulator and can ultimately be eliminated or abandoned between the user and the object. Error and unpredictability are founding characteristics of any ceramics process.&nbsp; Curing depends on (among other factors) clay consistency, mould form and age, and environmental humidity; firing depends on (among other factors) air bubbles, glaze thickness, and kiln temperature and quality.&nbsp; Explosions can occur as a result of air bubbles in the clay body overheating in the kiln. Eager to put our budding knowledge of slip-casting to work, we endeavoured to cast cooling towers.&nbsp; We sought out support at our university’s workshop to learn how to turn a model, to make a mould, to make our casts.&nbsp; Though in one sense the cooling tower shape was simply relevant content to practice model-/mould-making and casting, we quickly recognised the overlaps between the casting process and the state of the Rugeley ‘ B’ cooling towers.&nbsp; Both are characterised by waiting periods and an ever-present threat of destruction.&nbsp; We wanted to make multiple casts that, like the cooling towers, would be destroyed. We casted at school.&nbsp; We took the mould to Rugeley and casted at Oak Ceramics.&nbsp; With John’s guidance, we made a second mould.&nbsp; With two moulds, Molly and I were each able to cast in our own kitchens. <img width="3264" height="2448" width_o="3264" height_o="2448" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c9be55dd289285142a3c30929d4a2502b94cf6d5ff8f4d8ea46d770dfd4cd0d7/rps08.jpeg" data-mid="43210913" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c9be55dd289285142a3c30929d4a2502b94cf6d5ff8f4d8ea46d770dfd4cd0d7/rps08.jpeg" /> <img width="2448" height="3264" width_o="2448" height_o="3264" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c25d18b509e8816cf4584a071289daee77b80251472ee9cf2c4dbc0ef34f336f/rps09.jpeg" data-mid="43210914" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c25d18b509e8816cf4584a071289daee77b80251472ee9cf2c4dbc0ef34f336f/rps09.jpeg" /> Could the impending demolition carve out a space for celebratory send-off rather than nostalgic mourning?&nbsp; Steve and John from Oak Ceramics had at some point suggested putting handles on the cooling tower casts.&nbsp; We liked the idea of altering the object to serve an unexpected function.&nbsp; We glazed the casts to making them impervious to liquid using colourful glazes inspired by those we saw at Oak Ceramics. Glazing these pieces made the vessels possible to drink from.&nbsp; Appropriating a supremely British occasion, we decided to host a tea party in celebration (and destruction) of the cooling towers’ place in Rugeley. The tea party took place in Ravenhill Park, a green area over which the cooling towers loom. The spread included classic features like English Breakfast tea, Ploughman’s sandwiches, and scones served with clotted cream. But there were also unorthodox elements: Taiwanese tea, sugar cookies cut into the shapes of toilets and cooling towers, as well as chopsticks to stir the tea with (ordinary spoons were too wide for the concave shape). All declined, saying they didn’t want to—the casts were “too nice”.&nbsp; In these moments, it was difficult to push our participants for multiple reasons. As non-British foreigners, we navigate (feel) British spaces as pariahs; we worry constantly that we will be taken as forthright, rude, or altogether ‘inessential’. To be taken as pests pestering then, was a deep-seated fear of ours. (To own this pest-ness would perhaps be a whole other project.) Another consideration was that as an experiment, this tea party potentially demonstrated how our desire for Rugeleyians to break things was forced. As such, our impulse for cathartic breakage on the part of an-‘other’ was perhaps, coercive or paternalistic. In the end, our colleague Tine alone broke a couple of casts, and she broke them only because we begged her to do so (for our own catharsis?). Performing the undesirable act was really a favour for us. Strip Eyelashes at Home” and “Toy Safety”. Through research, a workshop, ideation, materialization and a short lm we were able to bring together a set of nine objects and a catalogue zine. We see the connection between the toy and the social prosthetic as cyclical, one constantly influencing the other. Our exploration of the link between both our topics began with us looking at the ways toys in uence children. When researchingthis topic we read articles, spoke to parents and children and we saw how children could be highly in uenced by the toys they weregiven. This in uence could be strong enough to steer then into specific career paths, shaping their lives in unexpected ways. Whenlooking closer at toy safety it is clear that its main focus is the physical safety of people. When regulators test toys they try their bestto determine how people might hurt themselves to preemptively try to stop dangerous situations from arising. They also add regulations after the toys have been released because it can be difficult to determine a person’s behaviour. This focus on the physical safetyof people, in turn, omits focusing on a person’s mental well being and how certain toys might affect them in the future. Toys play a big part in every child’s life, it exposes them to ideas about themselves and the world around them. Physical objects embedded with expectations thought processes and interpretations of the world. We use the term social prosthetic to represent objects like hair extensions, false nails, and false eyelashes etc. These objects are complex and multifaceted, they can be empowering, used for self-expression and self-care but they also represent the unobtainable beauty standards persons strive to reach. Physical objects that represent an attempt to reach aesthetic “perfection”. In this attempt, persons add, tighten, tuck, pluck and stick foreign objects onto their bodies. We imagine a different world were these altered social prosthetics are used by persons to understand the world around them, just as children use toys to understand their world. The aim is to disrupt beauty standards by utilizing playful techniques inspired by toys. We gave them a series of social prosthetics as well as craft materials to allow them to create their own extensions. The society is unfolded through a gift shop with the leitmotif conservation through gifting. We believe that the gift shop as a space has the opportunity to be something more than a place of postcards, souvenirs and other commodities. In our gift shop we invite the user to engage in museological practices. In particular the activity of conservation. For many people conservation conjures images of experts wearing white gloves while &nbsp;handling priceless artifacts in a sterile environment. The kits refuse the museum as an institution tied to singular geographical location and moves the museum out into the world in the hands and homes of the members of the society. In that process we aim to challenge the notion that conservation is only about keeping artifacts and living practices static, pristine and controlled within an institution. Gifting lies at the heart of The Society for Participatory Conservation. Each kit is only in the hands of a single member until they have used it to create their contribution to conservation. After that the kit is gifted onto an aspiring member of the society. This way the kits journey from person to person through the act of gifting leaving behind a trace of artifacts that become the museum out in the world. We see the gift shop as an introduction into thinking critically about the ways museum conserve cultural practices and artifacts. Inspired by the V&amp;A’s David replica we critique the conservation of artifacts. We critique conservation because as any conservator will tell you, any artifact will decay over time. The conservator, to the best of their abilities tries to hold true to the artifact. Trying to respect the “aura” of the artifact and maintain what makes it special and significant. However, what it means to keep an artifact as close to the original as possible, will always be subjective. According to world leading conservator Agnese Paronchi “Not one millimeter of its(Michelangelo’s David red.) original polished surface is left”. This kit gives you the power to engage in this conservation by giving you the agency to decide what is important and what is not through the act of creating a caste in many forms. By conserving cultures outside of the museum we hope to bring to light the many aspects of cultural life that cannot be conserved by using traditional conservation methods. I saw mountains representing different groups of people who were far apart. Meanwhile the eagle, which represented the wisdom, the harmony, and peace, hovered over different people. The sky and river are painted onto the canvas and the waterfall is of more than twenty different colours of yarn that fall from the artwork. Even different groups of people are divided, the harmony can be created when the communication like water flows between people and goes towards the same direction. As the wiser, like the eagle, leads people to the same direction, the world of peace and harmony is established. When visitors see the artwork from long distance they cannot tell the colours of yarn, since water in flows the same direction with harmony. I ‘thought’ deeply how to translate this proverb into a graphic display. I tried to use Chinese characters suspended away from a flat surface. I projected a light source to create shadows of the Chinese characters against the flat surface. The suspended Chinese characters ‘想法’ universally translates as ‘thoughts’ in the Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean language. Interestingly (and even amazingly), the projected shadows produced an entirely different Chinese character, and that was ‘神’, which means ‘God’ in all of the aforementioned languages, and in Japanese as well. Therefore, starting with the transformation of the characters ‘想法’, the character ‘神’ was created. It is like when people are connected with God’s thoughts, they become a god on earth. In the project, we designed a foldable body-sized toy tool to educate children about health care, blood type and blood donation. The props and storybooks were designed to help instructors interact with children. Thus teachers and staff could follow guidelines and lead children through the role-play exercises. The body also involves four story books for children learning about blood knowledge. Our aim is to let children have positive thoughts toward blood donation and then becomes a donor in the future.
